  • Silver Flakes: Fine metallic "glitter" in the oil indicates that the hard facing of the gears is actively shedding.

3. The Visual Leak Audit

In harsh climates, road salt eats away at the pinion seals and cover gaskets.

  • Check for "Sweating": A light coating of grime around the housing is a warning; a hanging drip is an emergency. A differential that runs "dry" will overheat and weld its internal components together within miles.
